Mobility starts with a community need

Drones and automated vehicles create new choices for moving goods and supporting services. Making those choices useful requires a clear purpose, a viable operating model and careful integration with the places they serve.

Fourier helps governments, councils, airports and businesses assess these opportunities, combining senior consulting experience with the lessons we are learning from building our own regional drone freight network.

Strategy and business models

Knowledge behind our advice

Our strategy and business model advice is built on two bodies of research that we maintain and update, one on how the market makes money and one on the technology that is available.

Business models

18 business models, studied globally

We have scanned the global market and documented 18 business models across drones, ground autonomy and enabling services, from government-paid medical delivery and farm spray drones to robotaxis, autonomous mining haulage and Defence pathways. Seven are already proven at scale, and the successful ones share an anchor customer paying a predictable fee and aircraft or vehicles that are kept busy.

Technology

106 platforms, compared side by side

Our platform catalogue profiles 106 drones, autonomous road vehicles and industrial robots from Australia, China, the United States, Europe and beyond, with their specifications, technology readiness and commercial status. It covers drones from under 250 grams through to defence-class aircraft, which lets us match the right platform to each use case, regulator and partner.

Air and ground considered together

We consider uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), automated ground vehicles and the handovers between them and conventional transport. The right solution depends on freight demand, terrain, access, community needs, safety and affordability.

Applications span commercial freight, healthcare logistics, disaster recovery and international humanitarian support, and each one requires its own operating and investment assessment.
